Before each show, she tries to forge a personal connection with the boy playing Billy.

"I go to them and I say: 'What can we focus on in terms of relationship in the play tonight?' and that's what's important to me," she said.

"Mrs. Wilkinson really brings this boy into his artistic and creative life. She's like the usher, the person who ushers him into that choice and so it's a huge development over a short period of time for those two people. So that's what I talk to them about."
I must have missed this, but wow!!!!!!! You're right, Ellen, that is something special!!!!!!! :D :D :D

I, along with other Forum members, was fortunate to have a lovely chat with Kate at the stage door after this evening's show.

She is a wonderful Mrs W and a terrific person as well.

Kate has her first gig after BETM Toronto set. She'll play Emma Goldman in the Shaw Festival's "Ragtime", which will start previews on April 10, 2012.

The Shaw Festival is one of Canada's premier theater experiences. This is great news for Kate and her fans. Audiences will see her 'shine' again. :D

I had forgotten about this announcement until yesterday when I received my season brochure for this year's Shaw Festival. I was nice to open it and see Kate's name and photo. "Ragtime" is one of my favorite musicals. I definitely plan to include this on the agenda for the summer. :D

Saw Ragtime at the Shaw Festival in Niagara-on-the-Lake recently and can highly recommend it. Kate Hennig, who plays the firebrand activist Emma Goldman, is sensational. If I have one quibble about her role, it's that there isn't enough of her in this musical -- just two numbers where we really get to hear her great pipes.

The Toronto Star's influential critic, Richard Ouzounian, gives the production three stars out of four ("good but not great"), but singles out Kate for special praise ("...she creates a totally complex character who holds our attention at every entrance. She embodies the true message of Ragtime: you are what you believe in.")

He also heaps praise on Thom Allison as Coalhouse Walker. Allison left the Broadway production of Priscilla to do this musical and his love for the part is evident at every turn.

Ragtime runs at the Shaw Festival until Oct. 14, but be warned that more than half of the performances are already sold out.

A suggestion for out-of towners: Since the Shaw Festival is just a 30-minute drive from Buffalo, BETM fans could catch both Ragtime and BETM during the week on Sept. 25 to 30 as our favourite musical makes a stop then at the stunningly gorgeous Shea's Performing Arts Center.

The amazing Kate Hennig returns to the Stratford Festival next year for the first time in over 20 years as she tackles the leading part of Golde in Fiddler on the Roof. She'll also play the Nurse in Romeo and Juliet.

It's an ambitious year for Stratford as the company also tackles:

The Three Musketeers
The Merchant of Venice
Tommy
Blithe Spirit
Othello
Measure for Measure
Mary Stuart
Waiting for Godot
Taking Shakespeare
The Thrill

Kate will return to the Shaw Festival in Niagara-on-the-Lake this summer, performing in both "When We Are Married" and "A Lovely Sunday for Creve Coeur".
