Billy Elliot screenwriter and Tony Award-winning book writer Lee Hall will adapt Michael Morpurgo's 1982 novel for the screen, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Stephen Spielberg is one of the producers of the film.

Morpurgo's book tells the epic tale of a friendship between a boy and a horse, who are separated, but whose fates continue to be intertwined over the course of World War I. The book was a runner-up for the Whitbread Award.

War Horse has been previously adapted by Nick Stafford, who wrote the stage version of the piece that has been a hit for the Royal National Theatre. This Olivier Award winning production continues to run at the West End's New London Theatre.

This show is BRILLIANT!

I can't believe I was getting so emotional about a HORSE!

I recall seeing another very intense play about people getting very emotional about a horse. Now what was it called??? ;)

In the wake of the play's Tony wins, here is an interesting article about the puppetry in the show:

Also, although I knew Spielberg was producing the movie, I didn't realize that Lee Hall was one of the writers.

In this video StageWon gets an exclusive interview with Matthew Spencer and Joey, stars of the London production. After watching for just a bit you can see how amazing these horses are crafted and operated!

Here is a trailer for the movie version, due out at Christmas time.

Lee Hall is listed in the credits for screenwriting. Given the timing of this release (end of the year) it sounds like Spielberg may be trying for another Oscar.

I will be front and center for this show on December 9th.

Watching the film version was nearly the death of me.

The live show could finish me off, but I hope not.

It's one of those rare times when I schedule a show other than BETM on a night when BETM is going on. Now that the Billy Board at the VPT has been moved, I won't even be tempted to take a gander at it that afternoon and be upset.
