My Review

TO CATCH A RISING STAR - go watch Shane Boucher as Michael at the Palace Theatre,Manchester N.H.. I have seen a few Michaels in my day but I was truly "gobsmacked" - Shane's performance is literally "jaw dropping" What a powerful presence this young man is on stage. Shane has extraordinary talent. He has the "it factor" "star quality" He has an amazingly beautiful singing voice and acting chops like a seasoned professional. His tapping skills are dazzling and although not seen in this role he is an accomplished ballet dancer. (A future Billy = I hope so). His performance was nothing short of "brilliant" I dare say in the range of the Tony nominated David Bologna. HE WAS THAT GOOD.He was right on with his comic timing and was hysterical with an arsenal of facial expressions and coy movements and sporting a killer smile. He was absolutely captivating. He had a keen sense of the role of Michael, He especially understood the vulnerability component and showed it so poignantly when he risks everything by kissing Billy. I have ever seen that one minute done so powerfully. Jamie and Shane did it so well you could hear a pin drop. I was also not prepared for what followed. Shane now dressed beautifully in his tutu does a few ballet-ish moves and then a split so complete he lands with his legs, not partially BUT FULLY stretched on the floor (what a way to drive home a point) Needless to say the nutcracker line had the crowd laughing uproariously on the verge of wetting themselves. As he walks off stage in his tutu I have never heard an audience applaud so loudly and enthusiastically. They just loved him.
I can't say enough or find enough superlatives to describe the joy and excitement I experienced watching this outstanding "must see" performance. Thanks Shane!

I agree wholeheartedly with jdmag's review of Shane's performance. Shane perfectly portrays the role in such a way that the audience understands the turmoil he is experiencing, beneath the outward humor, while wishing to support him. His comedic timing is perfect and his stage persona is extraordinary for one so young. Add to that the fact that he and Jamie are perfectly matched, in terms of size and tapping ability. One of the most endearing moments comes in the last seconds of the show when, after Billy says 'Ya - see ya, Michael', Shane drops his arms on the bike handlebar and rests his chin on them, as he watches Billy walk away. Stunningly effective!

Shane has been appointed to Northern Stage's prestigious Boot Camp:
Northern Stage is thrilled to introduce Boot Camp, a program designed to nurture young theater artists by providing in-depth training and mentorship for high school juniors, seniors, and recent graduates who want to pursue a career in the arts. With support from the Pussycat Foundation and created to honor the philanthropic and creative spirits of Helen Gurley Brown and David Brown, Boot Camp serves young artists who lack the resources to pursue professional-level arts training. Admission to colleges, BFA theater programs, and performing arts conservatories are highly competitive, and Boot Camp seeks to level the playing field by preparing students to compete at the highest level for continued arts and performance studies.
