Elton's Song (1982; 'The Fox')

Post by kport »

Elton's Song may be of interest to fans of Billy Elliot, for several reasons.

The lyrics are by Tom Robinson (of The Tom Robinson Band), and reflect his own childhood experiences. Tom and Elton were friends, and the former wrote the words for the latter, which became a song in 1979 (the year after Tom's breakout success, Glad to be Gay). It is thought that the title was merely what Tom scribbled on the sheet of lyrics he gave to Elton, before the music was composed. It is a rarity, in that it is an Elton song whose lyrics are not by Bernie Taupin. The subject matter of the lyrics was of significance to both Elton and Tom, whose childhoods were described as difficult, for reasons portrayed in this song.

The next BETM connection comes with the producer of this video (which is perhaps the first ever music video produced by a major talent): Eric Fellner. Eric went on to run Working Title Films, which produced Billy Elliot (the film), and was - and is behind - in licensing terms, if not more - every staged production of BETM, to this day.

Watch this. I will leave you to judge:
