Re: Why I picked Solidarity as my all time favourite
I think I mentioned this once before in the past, but the Broadway World UK person touches on a particular device I love in musical theatre, when different stories combine in a song, sometimes at the end of the first act, to help us see how the stories are either related or to bring them together as a reminder of everything going on, and sometimes just for fun.
My two favorite examples (but I'm sure I could come up with a list) are "Solidarity" from Billy Elliot The Musical and "Pick A Little, Talk A Little/Good Night Ladies" from The Music Man. Another famous example is "La Resistance (Medley)" in the South Park movie. Many scoff at the movie's content, but there were some damn good songs in there!
If anyone knows what this device is called (I'm guessing it's got a name), please let me know.

Actually I have no clue. But that is an excellent article, capturing the sheer genius of Solidarity.

The modern term seems to be "mashup." The older term that seems to fit best is "quodlibet."

I refer to them as 'montage' songs, but that's my own term, not an official one.
"Quintet" in West Side Story, and "Walk Through the Fire" from the Buffy musical episode are favorite examples of this, in addition to "Solidarity".
