I find it interesting that Billys/Michaels can be from anywhere (in the UK, I presume) but Debbies have to come from the Northeast.

Does anyone have a suggestion why, except that Billy/Michaels may be harder to find and the numbers harder to fill, than Debbies?

It's probably about supply/demand. I think the Michaels used to have to be from the north-east as well.

It just seems so arbitrary.

For example, a lass from Hull or Bridlington would be more 'authentic' to the role than a lass from middle class Hexham. Yet Hexham is much closer to County Durham than Humberside.

English regionalism is not all that cut and dried. It really isn't. They say - and I agree - that you can place a British accent within 50 miles of its origin - except for the universal RP (received pronunciation). I find this restriction...'interesting'.

Love the video. There's at least one familiar face in the bunch. :D

Here's an unusual story about a boy trying out to be in BETMUK. It's not unusual because the boy has a dream to be Billy in the musical, but because he's from Bermuda and has had to clear several hurdles to audition in England. It's aptly called Leap of Faith:
