It isn't just a joke: Pride

Post by ERinVA »

Those familiar with George's curtain-opener for Act 2 in London know that he always recognizes the Newcastle-upon-Tyne Gay and Lesbian Caucus among the contributors to the meat prize draw. Well, it seems there is a new film, "Pride," about the actual support of the miners from the lesbian and gay community during the strike. Granted that in this story the scenario involves Welsh miners, but the script is nevertheless based on a true story from the era.

The film has already been mentioned in the What movies did you see recently? thread, but I thought it was worth posting about it here as well.

I have to admit I was somewhat befuddled when I first heard George tell that joke. It seemed rather low brow. Glad to hear it's based on actual facts.

I see this film, "Pride", is directed by Matthew Warchus, who also directed "Matilda" both in the West End and Broadway. IMDB says the movie is due to be released this September in the UK. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt3169706/

It seems that nothing in Lee Hall's wonderful script is a throwaway. His knowledge of the history of the strike is both deep and broad.

Since 'Pride' has been mentioned in this thread, then perhaps this is best placed here: a trailer for the highly acclaimed film:

It looks very entertaining. I hope it will show up here at some point.

Wow this trailer looks very good! It is also another testament to the authenticity of BETM. The song heard in the opening of the trailer is very much in line with "The Stars Look Down" or "Once We Were Kings".

The Daily Torygraph (a.k.a. Telegraph) (Maggie Thatchers's broadsheet of choice) is a bit less complimentary about this film ('Pride'), and alludes to comparisons with Billy Elliot and Brassed Off:

Before Pride, there was Billy Elliot . Here, too, in this story of the son of a Northern striking miner, gay themes are prominent. One of Billy Elliot’s mates is gay and loves dressing up in girl’s clobber. Elliot himself, as pretty much everyone in the world will know, is into ballet, much to the bemusement of his rough-talkin’, uncultured mining family. They worry that he might be a poof. Through the interventions of a switched-on, gay-friendly dance teacher (Julie Walters), and the ballet establishment down in London that clasps Billy to its bosom, the miners’ prejudices are pricked and they come to see that there isn’t anything wrong with blokes dancing after all. Hurrah! Their lives are vastly improved! Er, not through keeping their jobs or anything tangible like that, but through their being morally saved by an external, more enlightened culture.

I wonder if the goal of the article was to be offensive or was the author actually trying to say something worthwhile. I suppose "gay-friendly" in his world is defined as "anyone who is not actively engaged in bashing and/or discrimination".
