Umina dancer Daniel Russell awarded Sydney Eisteddfod Ballet Scholarship

Umina dancer Daniel Russell is jumping for joy after winning one of the country’s top ballet awards.

The teenager, who has toured America in the title role of ballet musical Billy Elliott, has scooped the top prize of $10,000 in the prestigious Sydney Eisteddfod Ballet Scholarships – the richest prize for young dancers in the Southern Hemisphere.

“I’m over the moon,” said Daniel, 18, who wowed judges with his two performances in front of a full house at the Concert Hall at the Sydney Opera House on Sunday.

“The way I look at it I had already won just by getting into the finals. It’s been an amazing achievement for someone of my age and I feel very honoured,” he said.

Such great news for a great guy.
Here's hoping he can make his dream come true and come back to the U.S !
The Houston Ballet would be a great fit for him with several Aussies in the company and the Artistic Director and Ballet Master also from "down under".
I expect he is well known by now by companies here, and, hopefully this award will be just another bit of publicity to get him noticed.

It has been a while since we have had news of Daniel: he is now on the last stop on the World Tour as Baby John - Jets in West Side Story, currently playing in Auckland, NZ. His performance is singled out in this review:

Notable mention: Baby John from the Jets, his dance moves and the intensity he brought to the stage mean you can’t look away. It’s no surprise he played the lead in Billy Elliot the Musical in the US tour and in Melbourne
