Billy Elliot the film - Paul Weller's music

Post by Real Geordie »

The music tracks which crop up throughout the Billy Elliot film reflect not just the period when the strike took place, but also the social views of some of the artists who wrote and performed the songs. This is certainly the case with Paul Weller, who was lead of both The Jam and later The Style Council before going solo. During the strike he put together a charity ensemble called the Council Collective to raise money for striking miners. He may not be as well known outside the UK as Elton John or George Michael, but he is without doubt amongst the upper aristocracy of singers and songwriters within this country. He has continued to release successful albums over the last five decades, is still innovating, and is still “one of the people”- very much down to earth. Worth listening to some of his performances to gain some insight into his talents.
