Viewers of the Billy Elliot movie will remember the scenes in Billy's school: rather grim, old fashioned and dated (reminiscent, at least to me, of the grim surroundings in the film 'Kes'). The fictional Billy School was modeled after Easington Comprehensive School, and is now today called Easington Community Science College, a school for 11-18 year olds.

For those who are interested in how education has changed since Billy's time in 1984, this video (produced by the College) is particularly informative. Of particular interest is the Chair of Governor's description of how the school has tried to acknowledge its past coal mining history, whilst moving confidently into the future:
