I forgot to mention that Stephen Daldry made especial reference to Trudy Hindmarsh in his words at the end of the evening. Trudy is Director of the Stagecoach Theatre Arts Darlington & Yarm theatre Group.

Moreover, it was Trudy who first trained Jamie Bell..................the very first Billy Elliot 8-)

I guess there were some challenges in putting together the most cohesive show possible. You have to realize that there have been levels of choice all along the way in putting this show together. Not all groups producing versions of the show were able to be chosen to participate in the West End Gala, and once groups were chosen, then scene assignments had to be worked out based on what would work the best for the final production.

Also, what seems like imbalance might have had to do with the fact that some groups were larger than others, so in order to accommodate the kids in their groups, the larger groups had more to do. This is strictly a guess on my part, of course.

Here's a brief article from the website "This is Cheshire" about the CODYS Productions group, based in Warrington, and their participation in the Gala:

Muppet wrote: Lewis Smith from the ‘Polka Dot Academy’ was an extremely confident and entertaining ‘Michael’ in ‘Expressing Yourself’ and his friend Billy (Luke) was clearly enjoying himself too . The dancing dresses (gaudy Pantomime dame style outfits) were a little scary, but amusing!

Swan Lake was beautifully performed by Luke & Charlie from Polka Dot academy. A quality choreographed interpretation.
Just got back from seeing the Polka Dot Academy in Lincoln. I have to agree that Lewis played an extremely confident Michael. And after questioning the ice-cream lady found out that he had played the lead in Jungle Book in Easter and is generating a very strong cv in the theatre field.

I was very pleasantly surprised at the quality and standard of this performance, with a lot of praise directed to the young lads playing Tony, George and Michael and the girl playing Grandma - she had one of the best voices in this production and I quite enjoyed Grandma's song (this one is normally my least fav song in the production).

I did miss a few scenes that were in the west end production and actually prefer the more toned up swearing! And I'm a gal that usually frowns upon anything even mentioning anything worse and including the 's' word.

I took one of my colleagues who loved it and now we have plans to come to the WestEnd to see it fully!
