Glad you are okay, maria. We are indeed fortunate.
I am just gobsmacked at the photos and video coming out of NJ and NY! The Outer Banks, south of here, took a sizeable hit too, but in comparison to the destruction at the Jersey Shore, it is hardly anything!

Re: Hurricane Sandy
We got hit hard by winds and snow here in West Virginia. In my neighborhood a lot of trees and tree limbs came down, mostly from the weight of heavy, wet, snow. We were without electric power most of Tuesday and Wednesday, but power is back as of last night. But many rural areas in this part of the state are still inaccessible and without electricity.

Glad you got your power back, johnnyc. I hope you were able to stay warm while it was out. Do you have a generator?

Re: Hurricane Sandy
No generator, I depended on gas surface burners on my kitchen range, and spent a lot of time in that room during the day. Can be dangerous, I know. Fortunately, bed room was fairly warm both nights, because power had been on for a few hours the first evening (Tuesday), and it was restored Wednesday evening. But I am going to find a generator that operates on natural gas, and switches on automatically when the power fails. Will be expensive, but worth it, I think.

Yes, those automatic generators are quite expensive, but if you lose power often, then they make sense.

Re: Hurricane Sandy
If I could offer a little story of the effect of Sandy:
I have a young friend who's dad committed suicide as a result of depression. There is a group in Australia called the Black Dog Institute. My friend Jack and his brother and 2 sisters have been marathon training for 12 months to raise money for the Institute and to run the New York Marathon in rememberance of their father. They flew to New York a week ago and were the 2nd last flight allowed to land at JFK. Since then they have ridden Sandy for all he/she was worth and seen the destruction caused, the lives ruined and the losses experienced. But they remained upbeat about their cause. Today that was shattered with the cancellation of the New York Marathon. Jack now feels that it has all been for nothing and they haven't finished their "mission". Ever resourceful, they are trying to rally other runners in New York to do a marathon on Sunday - for all their own personal reasons. My friends will run on Sunday regardless and it is testamount to their courage and their love of their departed father.
http://www.everydayhero.com.au/blackdognewyorkmarathon is where you will find their story.
Thankyou for indulging me this
