Indianapolis Reviews

Here's the first review from Indianapolis -- from a blog theatre critic there:

Great review, but imagine how much more she would have appreciated it if she understood the 1984 miners strike. And again, she mentioned the music not being "hummable". She liked what she "got", but she missed so much.

Knowing the tour is out performing again just makes the whole world feel like a better place. =)

While critical, it also pointed out the strengths. To be honest, I don't 'get' the big dresses in the London performance, or the 'blue men wannabees' in the tour. They seem unnecessary; over the top. But I overlook those, due to the strength of Grandmother's Song, Angry Dance, Dream Ballet and, of course, Electricity. I do not find the songs especially memorable, on the whole, though they are certainly serviceable, which is what matters. The choreography is what makes the show special. And I absolutely concur with his praise of young Master Perets' performance.

We can only measure how good something is - if others find it less good.

One of the many layers of Billy Elliot The Musical is the Fantasy vs. Reality. I think that the dancing dresses express the fantasy of children playing. The dancing shadow-men in Grandma's song express her advancing senility. Both musical numbers give insight into the performing characters. Merry Christmas Maggie Thatcher gives insight into the mood of the town. All three numbers are genius, and are what makes BETM much more than just a remarkable performance of dance.

Another mixed review (though more positive than negative) from Nuvo, which bills itself as Indy's alternative voice:

And finally --- here's a rave review from theexaminer.com -- though the reviewer confused Dream Ballet with Electricity:
