Ballet in crisis over lack of women - Independent

Post by kport »

'Ballet in crisis over lack of women' screams the headline in today's Independent. 'It’s time for Billy Elliot to leave the stage.'

Crumbs! Who would have thought this would come from the legend of modern ballet, Carlos Acosta?

Or from a spokesperson for the Royal Ballet School?

The success of Billy Elliot, the story of a miner’s 11 year-old son who becomes a ballet dancer, has contributed to the imbalance. The Royal Ballet school in London, which spawned Dame Margot Fonteyn and Darcey Bussell, confirmed Acosta’s observation. A spokeswoman said: “Our directors have found it more of a challenge to find really talented girls in the past few years. The wave of talented boys has continued as the myth that ballet is for girls is even more widely dispelled.”

Perhaps the profile of the uber-talented Ballet Girls needs a boost? They are fantastic and are so often given second billing against the lads.

Maybe if they have so many talented boys now, they should be creating more roles for them instead of complaining.
Seems ridiculous to complain about too much talent.
