What is Matins ? I've heard of Evensong and Eucharist, but not Matins.

That's good information to know about asking to be sat in the Quire. Didn't know those seats were available to those attending the service. When I went to an Evensong at Westminster Abbey, I was seated out of view of the choir and quite far away from the pastor. . . so it was hard to really feel a part of the service.

Actually, it's spelled "mattins." In the Church of England, it's the morning prayer service. On Sundays, the service is at 10:15 AM, according to the current worship schedule for St. Paul's:

I have also been to the Sung Eucharist service there. Which service I attend is mostly dependent on how early I can convince myself to get over to the church.

Speaking of services, I spent Christmas in London a number of years ago. I attended the midnight Christmas Eve service at St. Paul's, and the Christmas Day Evensong service at Westminster Abbey. At the Evensong service, I sat on Charles Dickens. I am serious. Folding chairs were set up in the Poet's Corner, and my chair was located on Dickens' tomb in the floor.

If you're ever in London over Christmas, I recommend doing both services. But be sure that you have pre-arranged transportation back to your hotel after the midnight service, because the tube quits running at midnight, and it is very difficult to catch a cab after the service, as my friend and I found out.

Yes, and no. I have seen both spelling used in the Church of England.

More important is the distinction as 'Choral Mat(t)ins', which incorporates the singing of preces and responses, psalms (to Anglican Chant), the Jubilate and Te Deum, and an anthem or motet, by the choir. This is what one would experience at Choral Mat(t)ins at Westminster Abbey, or St Paul's Cathedral. 'Mat(t)ins' corresponds with Morning Prayer, a 'said' service.

According to their websites, the custom is 'Mattins' at St Paul's, and 'Matins' at Westminster.

This fall, LIBERA returns to the U.S. for two tours – October 25-November 2 and December 21-24 – in support of their smash hit 'ANGELS SING – CHRISTMAS IN IRELAND' album, which debuted at #1 on the Billboard Classical Charts last year.

Considering that I have only been to the service at St. Paul's, and not at Westminster Abbey, I will go with "mattins." 8-)

Indeed! ;)

But you really should drop into the Abbey for a service. One or two important people have,

and one was so moved by the choir that he arranged to bring it to his own city.............

For my fellow Americans living within striking distance of Washington, the National Cathedral will be hosting a series of concerts by three famous English choirs:

Westminster Abbey October 22 2014

King's College, Cambridge March 21, 2015

St. Paul's Cathedral April 26, 2016

Details may be heard on this video:

It's been announced that Libera will do a concert at the Tobin Center in San Antonio on 4-Apr-2015. This is probably part of a US Spring Tour. Stay tuned for more stops.
