Apologies - I had to do this!

Willy Elliot the Musical

(An adaptation of Billy Elliot the Musical, for all-girls' school cast)

Synopsis:

A young fatherless girl, Wilhelmina Elliot - also known as Willy - stumbles across a boxing class while attending a ballet lesson at her mother's behest, a lesson she totally dislikes. Inspired by boxing gloves, punch bags and the masculine whiff of leather and canvas, she follows her dream to become the next Joe Bugner, encouraged by her cross dressing friend, Michelle. But she faces extreme opposition from her family: her mother, Jacqui, an unemployed stockbroker, LSE graduate and formerly with Lehman Bros., London, says boxing is 'for lads in shorts'; her elder sister, Antonia ('Tonee'), who aspired to follow in her mother's footsteps at the FTSE before the crash of 2008 scuppered that dream, says in her plum Cheltenham Ladies' College voice that 'she is just a lass' and should 'jolly well act like one'; and the people of her community, in leafy, Chelsea-tractor-filled suburban Esher, County Surrey, derisively mock Willy's dream, until they are convinced that her desire is genuine. Only her rather dotty and often inebriated Grandpa, known as 'The Major' (ex-RAF Spitfire pilot), is on her side from the get-go, as he recalls that he, too, once aspired to become a champion boxer, before The Hun put paid to that dream. Willy finds that she has the enthusiastic and understanding encouragement from her boxing class teacher, Orlando Cruz, who first notes her potential the moment he watches her lace-up her Converse boots, and don her Everlast boxing gloves.

Follow this tuneful story (the Book adapted by none other than Dame Edna Everidge; Elton John's score brought up to date by Rufus Wainwright) as we watch Willy follow her dreams, as she learns to float like a butterfly, and sting like a bee!

Now that the show has been licensed for productions by schools and other organizations around the UK, I have created a new section to cover these productions.

This thread can serve as a place for general chat on the topic of those productions.

This article, while not specifically about Billy Elliot, gives a unique look at Dauntsey's School, Devizes, which is putting on BETM in December:

No reviews or photos yet, but here is more information about rehearsals for the BETM production at Manor House School (all girls). According to the dates, the production is on the boards as we write. I will be interested to see some photos, etc., if any appear.

The show is taking place in November but auditions have already taken place for the whole-school performance with almost 100 children turning up.

The hopeful performers sang songs from the show including Electricity before school teachers selected who will be in the final cast.

The school secured a licence for the performance on March 2 and 80 students and staff visited a Theatre Royal production of the show.

The school's links with Billy Elliot go back a number of years as ex-student Josh Fredrick undertook the lead role in a West End production eight years ago.

Billy Elliot takes centre stage at Wootton Upper School.
The cast includeds a talented and passionate group of young people aged between 13 and 18, with the leading role played by Rory Fraser, a year 10 student who already has a number of showbiz credits under his belt.

Rory starred in the RSC’s production of Matilda in the West End where he played Bruce Bogtrotter. He dances with Myra Tiffin Performing Arts School where he trains in contemporary, jazz, ballet, tap, modern, street dance and gymnastics to name just a few!

He recently competed in Destination Dance competition in London where he came first with his contemporary duet and second overall for the whole competition with a score of 95.5 out of 100.
