Specifically, in the 60's, which was a big era for folk music, a hootenanny was a gathering of folk singers where anyone could perform. On the professional level, there was a popular TV show called Hootenanny, which originated from a different college campus each week:

The BETM tour company has periodic hootenannies, a talent night for the tour family. I've seen videos and photos of various ones. Some time ago, the child cast did their own version of the Angry Dance riot.

Sean and Ellen pretty much described what a hootenanny is. It's another term for miscellaneous, ie: anything goes. Specific to the BETM company, on days when they have two performances, they have some down time during their dinner break between shows. Some of those days they have a hootenanny, an occasion in which company members perform for one another.

And now that that's settled, perhaps it's time to get back to the wonderful Cal. :D

I would suggest people watch that video more than once. The first time of course is to see what little Cal can do with "Electricity". The second time just watch Ben as he watches Cal. It is obvious that Ben was the one who coached him, as you can see how intently Ben is following Cal's every move. It makes me see Ben in a different light, now more as the mature older Billy of the company, guiding the newbies (hopefully that made sense).

It's so fun watching Ben just so ECSTATIC as he's watching Cal.

Here's another performance by Cal at the same Hootenanny. This time he plays the violin. Just like Ellen said about Myles, how much talent can one kid have?

OMG...what can't this kid do? I teach 7th and 8th graderS who still can't find a note in their pocket much less walk on two feet. Seriously, I would like to know when and where he gets the time to practice violin and dance. I know these boys and girls have a heavy schedule and not many hotels will allow practice in the rooms. Just wondering. But...WOW!
