Despite the fact that Lee Hall's opera, "Beached," did finally go on, he is considering legal action against the council, according to this article:

I love the bit where he is asked if writing is his ballet and he replies that a film of him typing wouldn't have been as interesting.

For those going to see BETM in Fort Lauderdale in March, just up the road you can also catch Lee Hall's The Pitmen Painters:

Lee Hall has written an open letter about the proposed Newcastle library closures:

We are fighting the same thing in my UK county: nine local libraries are under threat of having county council funding cut. Fortunately many volunteers have come forward to keep them open and there has been a legal challenge in court to prevent this, and so far the Council has not acted.

Not only are local libraries useful for accessing books, but they are often local centres for Citizens Advice Bureaus, community meetings, and open access to the internet. Often they are the only warm place for our elderly to meet and spend a day from lonely isolation. The idea that libraries have not adapted with technology is utter rubbish. County Councils seem to target local libraries whenever central government cuts back funding, but never address cutting salaries of council leaders. I suppose targeting local libraries does rile up the constituency and helps councils fight Whitehall cuts. It is all politics, and Lee Hall is absolutely right to use his bully pulpit to stand up to save local libraries. We should do the same if we can; I have written to council leaders and my local M.P., and have been on the committee to save local libraries for nearly two years. Stephen Daldry, Martin Clunes (Doc Martin) and Billy Bragg have spoken in aid of local causes in our county (and theirs). Even in deep, dark rural Dorset we are not P(ali-)hilistines! Voices count!
