Spider-man - Turn Off The Dark

Post by Billy Whiz »

This new Broadway show had its first preview on Monday. Going by comments in various websites things did not go well.

The next performance is this evening so let's hope things go better. With the cost of staging the show at $65m it needs to be a BIG hit.

60 Minutes did an excellent 'behind the scenes' piece on the show this past Sunday. You can watch the video here:

It looks like quite a spectacle.

The producers of this thing can't add. Even if they are a top grosser for the next few years they will have trouble making anything on the show. They have 1 million dollars a week in expenses. Even if Spiderman sells as well as Wicked, Lion king, or Billy they will still be facing several years before they break even.

I agree with you gburr. The financial outlook for the show looks pretty dim unless it becomes a very long running hit like Cats or Lion King.

On the other hand, if Spiderman is still running a few years from now I can easily see Tommy Batchelor playing the lead. Tommy seems to love acrobatics, plus he already knows how to fly.

Another injury in the closing moments of tonight's Spiderman:

http://artsbeat.blogs.nytimes.com/2010/ ... rformance/
Theatergoers who attended Monday’s performance of “Spider-Man,” a $65 million musical laden with complicated aerial stunts, said they saw either the actor playing the title character or his stunt double fall about eight to ten feet into the orchestra pit during the closing minutes of the show, and that some equipment fell into the audience when this occurred.

The New York Department of Labor has begun an investigation into last night's incident and Actors Equity has now entered the fray with regard to the safety issues of this show:

Also, CNN is reporting that the actor is listed in serious condition at Bellevue Hospital:
